Master of Gastronomy Amy Reiley one of five finalist in world’s first award to honor women in the wine industry

(Las Vegas, NV) On June 16, 2005, Las Vegas and Los Angeles-based wine journalist and consultant Amy Reiley competed against four of the wine industry’s most dynamic educators and spokeswomen for the first-ever Wine Women Awards. The five finalists were selected from over 160 competitors representing 16 nations.

As a Wine Women Award finalist, Reiley was required to participate in a daylong competition held at Paris’ Bristol Hotel. Components of the competition included a written exam exercising industry knowledge in combination with a blind tasting of six wines. The day ended with an interview conducted by a panel of wine industry technical experts. The judging committee consisted of notable French wine figures including Laurence Jobard and Veronique Drouhin of Burgundy’s Maison Joseph Drouhin.

Sponsored by Le Bottin Gourmond, Maison Joseph Drouhin, Cordier, Moet et Chandon and Mikasa, the competition, held every second year, seeks to recognize women with a broad wine knowledge as well as a passion and dedication to the promotion of wine. Reiley was one of only two North American contestants. The other competitors included Leena Jansson of Finland, Ryo Wada from Japan and Parisian sommelier Francine Praly. The winner, Amy Mumma from Central Washington University, is a Master of Wine candidate and one of America’s most prominent wine educators.

Women involved in all aspects of the wine industry, with the exception of vintners and oenologists, are eligible to compete. As a prominent wine journalist, guest speaker and the creator of the world’s first PDA program on wine, Amy Reiley’s Pocket Vineyard, Reiley was invited to participate. Her work as an industry innovator is also evidenced through her website and monthly Life of Reiley newsletter, http://www.lifeofreiley.com/wp. Reiley, one of less than 20 Le Cordon Bleu Masters of Gastronomy in the world and creator of Aphrodisiac of the Month, the first gourmet food-of-the-month to celebrate sensual foods, is considered a leading authority on food and wine as aphrodisiacs. She is invited to vie for the Wine Women title again in 2007.
